Experiencing art is a choice.
We can ignore it and take it for granted or we can enrich our lives and create an appreciation of the art we live with.
2020 JDAC Mural Competition
On October 7th, 2020 Hastings College held their fifth annual mural competition Covid edition for high school students virtually. Being virtual this year 6 Hampton Art Students set up a studio space behind the shop to compete. At the beginning of the day each Zoomed with Hastings College staff for the announcement of this years theme. Once they announced that the theme for the day was "Just Desserts" we were able to begin planning the 46"x76" vinyl mural. This competition was all about the students and teachers were to only observe and answer student questions. The students painted with a purpose and worked together to create a successful composition in four hours. The students were in competition against 33 other schools from different class sizes across the state. Even though we did not place these students worked hard and worked very well together. I am so proud of what they accomplished and that we were still able to compete this year!

Once they announced that today was going to be all about memes were were able to open our envelop began planning their 46"x76" vinyl mural. This competition was all about the students and teacher were to only observe. The students painted with a purpose and worked together to create a successful composition in four hours. The students were in competition against 36 other schools from different class sizes across the state. Even though we did not place these students worked hard and worked very well together. 2018 JDAC Mural Competition
On September 14, 2018 Hastings College held their third annual mural competition for high school students at the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center. They continued with the same way of choosing a theme this year as they did last year doing a mashup. Ruth Mathson was the lucky Hampton student who drew for the group. The three words drawn: Medusa head, coffee, and art materials. Once students had their three words they began planning their 46"x76" vinyl mural. This competition was all about the students and teacher were to only observe. The students painted with a purpose and worked together to create a successful composition in four hours. While the students worked they caught the eyes of the Grand Island Independent Newspaper and two students were interviewed: Ruth Mathson and Treavar Pekar. The students were in competition against 26 other schools from different class sizes across the state and we finished in the top 6 schools but did not get one of the four coveted blown glass trophies. The top four schools this year were: 1st place- Kearney High School, 2nd place-Thayer Central High School, 3rd place-Hastings High School, and in 4th place-Grand Island Northwest High School. Even though we did not place these students worked hard and I am so proud of what they accomplished! We ended our day of competition with a sweet treat from Dairy Queen as they well deserved it!

2017 JDAC Mural Competition
On September 20, 2017 Hastings College held their second annual mural competition for high school students at the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center. The theme for the competition was presented differently that last year. One student from each school drew words out of three different containers that created the theme for the mural they would create that day. Ruth Mathson was the lucky Hampton student who drew for the group. The three words drawn: pugs, noodles, and squids. The students were allowed 30 minutes to collaboratively plan out their composition on the 46"x76" vinyl mural surface with their teacher. The students painted with a purpose and worked together to create a successful composition in four hours. The students were in competition against 20 other schools from different class sizes. We did not place in the top three but I am very proud of our Hampton Hawks and the hard work they put into their mural.
